Since we came back in November, the children have been reading ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit - a story of two young children escaping the eruption of Pompeii in 79AD. This was followed by creating non-chronological reports all about volcanoes. The children absolutely loved finding out about how they worked and where to find volcanoes all around the world.

In maths we have been looking at multiplication and division and getting our heads around the formal written method for both. After some tricky lessons the children have grasped these new concepts really well and are starting to apply them to all of their work. We have also started to look at measurement, including adding and subtracting to link back to what we have learned earlier in the year.

Both classes have had outdoor learning days with Mrs Griffin. Many children have ended up covered in mud, but all children had a huge smile on their face at the end of the day. Mr Smith even got involved helping a child fish out a dropped glove from a muddy puddle! Our history has continued looking at prehistory in the UK covering the Stone Age to Iron Age and we have now looked at houses, hill forts and a range of artefacts from that period.

In music children have been exploring different rhythms using a range of percussion instruments as well as starting to learn some songs for the upcoming Christmas performance.

In Art we have been looking at the work of Roy Lichenstein and looking at the complimentary colours and simple drawing style he uses in his artwork. We have then used this as inspiration to create our own versions of his work drawing items from the classroom and simple portraits. We have then used a variety of different materials to colour these in ensuring that the images stand out.

As you can see we have been up to loads in year 3 and we can’t wait to share more of our learning with you in the new year.
